I love that song by Hillsong. I still marvel at that exchange, and that is what I want to unpack a little for just a moment.
Each one of us knows that we’re a little messed up in some way, if we’re honest with ourselves. None of us has ever been perfect. Even the best versions of ourselves are still messed up in some way. And if you don’t or won’t come to that conclusion, there’s a pride issue there, and that’s another subject. We’re not terrible people or anything. We’ve just got to recognize that we’re all a little messed up.
God wants to reconcile with us and wants a relationship with each one of us. So God provides a way for this to happen. It’s simple, too. This is not complicated.
Whenever we acknowledge that Jesus is who He is and we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, a beautiful thing happens. We give Him all of who we are in exchange for all of who He is. We give him our mess and He gives us His righteousness. Simple. But Cool! Why is that not a great deal?
We don’t deserve it. We can’t earn it. But He does it anyway. Our lives don’t get all rosy and issue-free – we still live is this world with all kinds of bad stuff. And that doesn’t mean we can never mess up or anything – that’s not realistic.
But that exchange, though! How awesome is that?! I still can’t wrap my head around it. Just know that you don’t have to do this life on your own. We don’t have to carry our mess around forever and have it influence every decision we make. Exchange your junk.
